iPhone

Yes - I got screwed on iPhone round 1.  I paid way too much condidering they dropped the price about 60 days after it came out.  But I still love my phone - seriously.  Especially with the 2.0 patch.

There are now downloadable applications - and some of them are very good - and free.

These are the ones I consider must have.

The Google App is fantastic.  It will not only search the interwebs, and automatically try and guess what you’re typing in as you type it - it will search your phone.  Very good stuff.

Shazam - I had never heard of this until my buddy Big T mentioned it to me.  This little proggy actually listens to a song on speaker phone, and will then tell you what it is.  So if you’re driving down the road - and hear a song but don’t know the name of it - use Shazam to tag it, it will record a few seconds of the song, and tell you what it is.  How?  I have no fucking idea.  From a technological aspect - I can’t figure out how this works.  In addition, you can then download the song from iTunes and probably several more options that are also well thought out.  Great software piece.

Myspace - Our work blocks myspace, or logs it or whatever.  This gets around it for now, and is designed with the iPhone in mind.  Very nice application - short and sweet like an iPhone app should be.

Wordpress - the Wordpress plugin is also great for blogging from wherever.  Better than blogging via e-mail (another wordpress option) as you can select tags/categories, and perform several more options.  Did not see an easy way to add pictures - but still the best means of mobile blogging to Wordpress that I’ve found.

I also have the Movies App, which does what it needs to (give me times to X movie at X theater) but could probably be more well functioned.

AOL Instant Messenger - Also works well, though I don’t use it enough to review it.

AOL Radio - Actually works very well.  Sadly - no way to stream while doing things with other applications as this one needs to be running as far as I know.

More to come….

Windows Vista

So I had been contemplating installing Vista on my home machine, but was given a copy at work to do some testing.  Installed it ok - and am set up as an administrator of the box.  Here are some of the things that I think are retarded.

ipconfig.jpg
See this?  This is dumb.  I should not have to run a command prompt as administrator if I’m already an administrator of the box.  I’m trying to flush my dns, not infect my PC with a virus.

Something very similar happened when I tried to edit a host file.  I’m able to open the file, and change characters in the file just fine.  If I try and save it, it won’t let me.  It just says “Cannot create hosts.txt file.  Make sure that the path and file name are correct.” after it asks if I want to overwrite the file.  Um…  Sure.
What’s even more frustrating is the descriptions it gives sometimes…  The requested operation requires elevation?  What the hell does that mean?  I should pick my PC up off the floor and have it on my desk?  Will I be able to run it then?

So for my home PC at least - I will not be installing Vista on my second partition - even if I were somehow able to obtain a free version.  I’ll be running something like Ubuntu or nothing at all.

Vista FTL.

Deathly Hallows

Max and I hung out at the Barnes and Noble Friday night with our friend Nikki waiting for the midnight release of HP7 - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.  There were some nifty activities for the kids, and Max had a good time looking at all of the costumes that people were wearing. Best costume there was ..  Actually, I can’t say who won…

I finished the book finally, and was happy with it.  I thought that J.K. Rowling did a fantastic job wrapping up all the big loose ends, and I really have no complaints.  I’m not going to spoil anything here - for those who are still reading, so I’ll pretty much leave it at that.

Arrogant much?

One of the nice features of my site, is that I can see who links to me. Always nice to see where traffic’s coming from, am I right?

So imagine my surprise when I see a link from crimefictionblog that mentions me. Let’s see what they have to say…

“There is also a David Montgomery who is a very distinguished professor of labor history at Yale, and a David Montgomery who is a pianist and conductor. (I used to get the latter’s phone calls all the time when we were both at UCSB.) There’s even a David Montgomery who snagged my domain name, even though he uses it to no good purpose.”

Wow, this is the second other David Montgomery that’s contacted me in regards to my site. The first is an artistic Shamanistic painter, who lives in Colorado I believe. Very nice paintings, and again, I highly recommend visiting the site to take a look.

So this second David Montgomery, let’s call him David J (as in Jackass) first of all whines about me “snagging his domain name” then claims that I use it to no good purpose…

Let’s address snagging the domain first. My name is David Montgomery - not Robert Jones, so for me, purchasing the domain name “DavidMontgomery.com” just made sense. Just because I chose to purchase an actual domain name, instead of using something less sophisticated like Blogger, doesn’t mean that I had the intention of “snagging” the domain name for profit or annoyance. In fact, someone else (I highly doubt it was David J) owned the domain prior to me, and I waited for it to expire as it wasn’t being used, then purchased it. It’s a shame that David J wasn’t savvy enough to purchase the domain in a timely manner- which was available to him just as it was to me - and make it his site. It’s just tragic really.

(Continuing this draft from months ago…   What’s funny is Jackass almost let his ‘crimefictionblog’ expire.  I actually thought about buying the domain during the expiration period and doing absolutely nothing with it.  Which is pretty much what David J does with his…)

As for the using it to no good purpose - Who the fuck died and made him the Internet Site Master for the Center of Usefulness?  The last time I checked, I don’t need to offer services, or bad book reviews to have a useful site.  This site is my hobby.  It’s useful to me.  And to the millions and millions of fans that come here daily.

Asshole…

Myspace…

Yeah, I got sucked back in again
